DO: They were followed, they were stoned, boys from your school.

MP: Rubbish.

DO: Now they're frightened – they're hiding.

SJ : This is deep water Dora – now I think you should let Miss Patience.....

MP: Appalling troublemakers – they accused one of my boys –
you know little Simon – his brother.
They said he burnt a caravan – we had the police here. Not a word of truth in it, obviously.

DO: Wasn't there?

SJ: Dora!

DO: A horse was drowned!

SJ: If they really wanted to be let out before the others, I'm sure Miss Patience....

DO: She said no.

MP: We cannot single out pupils for special treatment.
They're lucky to be at the school at all.

DO: Why?

MP: Oh come along my dear, you know as well as I do,
you come from a good family.

SJ: I'm not sure that that's.....

DO: (to Sir John)Just a minute...(to Miss Patience)
you're saying they're different.....

MP: They're Gypsy's!

DO: If they're different they shoujld have special treatment –

Dora has returned to Follyfoot and enters the stables, where her Uncle is waiting.

CO: Dora? I hear you were rude to Miss Patience.

DO: (to herself)Horrid old bat.

CO: Dora!

DO: (to herself)You're one of us dear! Top drawer, nice family, mustn't mix with the riff-raff!
(to the Colonel)Can you stay Uncle? I'm terribly alone. We live on islands Uncle –
we hide from each other – suspicious, cruel – Sir John says stay on your island, the water's too deep.

CO: It's not that simple as that Dora.

DO: That's what everybody tells me, and I don't want to hear it.
There's three horses dying and if I listen to every side, then – well
– they'll be no one to help them or love them –
and the Gypsy's won't forgive them and Miss Patience will never understand –
and we all stay on our islands and feel ashamed. Who builds the bridge?

Ron is still at the Gypsy camp, playing with the children.
They have tall, paper 'trees'. Ron is leading them shouting “humbala”.
Dora and Slugger arrive leading four horses from Follyfoot.

DO: Ron!

RO: 'Allo girl – here, we gonna have a cavalry charge?

DO: How are they?

RO: Two up, one to go – touch of the old medicine man and you're in!

DO: The vets injections.

RO: (scoffs)Ah get off! You'd believe anything, you would.
It's the magical pooh stick wots done it (gestures to the children)
they think I'm a witch doctor.(give the thumbs up)
Right, come on kids – back to work – humbala....

DO: (to Ron) Let them graze over there, will you
(hands the leading reins to Ron) there's fresh hay in the horse float.

RO: Right, okay. (Slugger and Ron take the horses away)

SL: Gawds knows – give us a hand unloading.

Dora sees them and hesitates, half hidden behind a tree.)

DO: Steve!

(Steve walks up the slope, Dora turns away,
Tina remains by the water side.)

ST: Hey, what's the matter?(waits a beat)
You don't have to tell me, really. Miss Patience told you to go to blazes.
Sir John...thing told you to mind your own business,
and the Colonel said don't interfere.
So now you're ignoring them all, but your not quite sure what you're doing is the right thing or not.

DO: (to Tina)Look...look, I've brought you some horses.
We'll take the sick ones and you can have ours, for the time being.
Tell your father to get these caravans off the boggy ground,
and....and he can put them on to our...on to my land.
There's woods and streams and you'll be safe –
the kids will never find you . Sir John will see you get out of the school early,
and...well...if there's anything else we can do...we'd like to.

ST: (to Tina) Told you....didn't I?

TI: (to Dora) He said you were kind...thank you.

(Tina leaves to tell her father the good news)

DO: (to Steve) Can you bring the horses?

DO: Yes. Oh, there's one more, probably in the morning.

ST: I'll drive over.

DO: Is the hay (something-unable to decifer)?

SL: Yeah.

ST: Here...where's Ron?

SL: (speaking to a bush with smoke coming out of it)Right..
