The Bridge Builder - the transcript (DO)= Dora (ST)= Steve (CO)= Colonel (SL)= Slugger (MP) = Miss Patience (TI) = Tina(gypsy girl) (SI) = Simon (RO) = Ron *~*~* PART TWO *~*~* Steve, on Hercules, is galloping back to Follyfoot. He reaches the stable yard and starts to call out. ST: Slugger? Slugger! (the boy Simon is in the yard)Open that gate(to Simon). Ron? Ron! SI: Mister, mister... ST: What'cha want? SI: It's me big brother – he wants to be in your riding class. ST: Not now. (Slugger appears out of one of the stables) ST: Ron? Ron! You got the blankets mate? RO: What's goin' on? ST: Gypsy horses mate – Battersly Wood. (the boy, Simon, has followed Steve into the stable and stands in the doorway) RO: Eh? ST: Colic or something – I don't know – we need turpentine, need linseed oil. Um – you gotta come with me mate. It's too much to carry – get a horse and saddle bags, right? RO: Oh. Right. (they run out, leaving the boy, Simon, behind) *~*~*

Back at the Gypsy camp, Dora is checking on the horses. DO: It must be the stream. TI: It's quite fresh – we use it. (Dora walks down the back to check the stream - Tina is sitting on a log bridge across the water) TI: They're going to be alright – aren' they? DO:(to herself) Streams alright – I don't know, Tina. What happened at the school? TI: They used to follow us home – throw stones. One night they came and took a horse – they drove it into the river. We move where no one can find us. We asked Miss Patience to let us out five minutes early – before the rest – so they couldn't follow us – but Miss Patience said it was a privilege enough to be at school – had to come out with the others. They followed us – set a caravan alight. So my father brought us here. They won't find us – so we mustn't go to school, mustn't trust anyone – ever again. *~*~*

(Steve arrives at the gypsy camp with Ron in tow.) DO: What have you brought? ST: You name it – what is it, do you know? DO: Red worm. ST: (looks aghast)That's for the vet – we can't.... DO: Steve, they're terribly ill. TI:(angry) My father said I shouldn't have let you come – I said you'd cure the horses. ST: You need a vet! TI: You know what to do – you've got the medicine ST: They need drugs, they need injections – we can't give them those. TI: No vet, Steve. DO: They'll die, Tina. ST: She's right – get the vet, or they'll die. It's up to you. (to Dora)Get Dado out girl – get him back to Follyfoot. (to Tina)It's the marshy ground – you couldn't have picked a worse place for horses. TI: We didn't choose. ST: (to Dora)We'll stay – try and talk some sense in to..... DO: I'm sending the vet. TI: Please... DO:(to Steve)Talk to her, will you?(to Tina) I can't not do anything, (to Steve)I'll tell the vet you'll be at the bridge – eleven o'clock. (to Tina) Okay? *~*~*
